Matty is Back!

February 19th, 2008

I know I’ve been neglecting the monkeymartian universe, but my time recently has been preoccupied with junior. This is just a quick note to say that I’m still alive. Football season is over for a while so I can’t whine about the Eagles. Maybe they’ll have the “perfect” season next year. Al, I’ll talk to you soon!

A Rough Week

September 18th, 2007

Just to clarify, this week hasn’t been any more rough than previous weeks, it just feels harsher. Vacation is just 2 weeks away and you can only tell yourself so many times to “relax, you’ll be on vacation soon, let it slide!”. So other than that, life is pretty good.

I know the Bros have already talked about Geek-Gasm in their blogspots, but I do have to say it was well deserving of the people’s choice extra showing. The only problem is that I always thought I understood geeks and their place in the Universe. I used to see them at school and I see them now at work. I think I will treat these people with a little more respect now. Seeing the enthusiasm that these people have for obscure references and strange names…

A Sad Week

September 18th, 2007

It’s been a while since I last posted, but that comes down mostly to laziness. I could talk about my summer and vacation but at this point in time there is more pressing news to talk about.

First off, I would like to send my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Robert Jordan. After a courageous battle with amyloidosis, he finally succumbed at 2:45pm on September 16th. As a fan of his writing, I will miss all of the stories that he never had a chance to share, but I would rather he enjoyed his health than write a story for me.

R.J., you will be missed.

On a more superficial note, I just finished watching the Monday Nighter with my beloved Eagles getting beat by the ‘Skins. 0-2, I don’t know what to think. Maybe some spycams would help them out. As a fan, McNabb played horribly, the WR’s couldn’t get open, but at least nobody dropped a punt/kickoff return. To quote Chewy, “The Saints are 0-2 also”.

That’s about enough negative vibes for now. Hopefully my next blog will be a little more cheerful.

A Rough Week

July 30th, 2007

It hasn’t really been a rough week, it’s just a normal week, but I guess every week is a rough week when a normal week is rough. I’m not trying to be melodramatic, but I go on vacation in 2 weeks. Normal things seem to get at you a little bit more when you tell yourself “just let it slide, you’ll be on vacation soon!” I guess it’s even worse when you come back, though.

I know that the other Bros have posted about Dave’s play Geek-Gasm at the Fringe Festival. It’s over now, but if you didn’t see it, you missed a great play. It was well deserving of the Fan’s Choice Award with the extra showing. It really made me think about and appreciate all the geeks that I’ve known throughout my school days and the ones I know now. I guess I shouldn’t have been so hard on them. It reminds me of Frodo telling Sam that he sees why Bilbo pitied Gollum…Ahhh, I’m one of them!

Get me a lightsaber!

Geekness aside, I’m still an NFL and more importantly a Philadelphia Eagles fan. Training camp started this weekend so that means Football action soon! I think the Eagles have a chance of being something special this year, but that might be the wish of a homer. I think the offense will be as strong as ever, but the D will suprise everyone.

Best In Class: McNabb

May 11th, 2007

I’m not trying to sat that Donovan McNabb is the best Quarter Back out there, but who can disagree that he at least one of the classiest. Since the draft, the media has been itching to get some sort of quote from DMac about the Eagles selecting a QB as their first pick. When it comes to the Eagles and controversy, McNabb has always taken the high road. Be it Rush Limbaugh or Terrel Owens, he just isn’t going to say what the media is salivating for. I just watched a press conference with him and he didn’t say one bad word about the Eagles organization. He knows how the organization works and they don’t like to get caught off guard. In any position, when a player starts to get older or a little closer to the end of his contract, the Eagles will draft a potential replacement. When it comes to QB, it seems to take a little longer to reach your stride, so if Kolb pans out, he will be the Heir apparant in 3-4 years.

Anyone who is a true Eagles fan knows that they only want the best and will introduce new faces to make the veterans work harder. As well, it doesn’t hurt that players in the prime of their career are teaching the rookies how to play the game. There is no player on the Eagles who thinks that if and when his game starts to downturn, his job is safe. Some might say that this doesn’t build loyalty, but I say it makes the players work harder. I would like to think that the NFL is still one of the last bastions of pro leagues where the majority of players see a championship as more valuable than a few more dollars on a contract. I might just be having a pipe dream there!

In Like a Lion…

March 26th, 2007

Well, March is almost over, and despite some cold weather and snow storms, the tempertature has finally reached a modicum of tolerability. I guess in this day and age we get better weather in December and January. I think that Andrew will soon be busting out the human powered transportation as the chance of snow (at least lingering) is minimal. The sun in the eyes should get better, Andrew, once the REAL Daylight Savings Time begins. I hope that SOMEONE who’s NOT living in the States has benifitted from the early time change. For that matter, I hope that someone living in the States has benifitted!? But I’m not bitter.

The end of March also signals the fact that the Silly Season of free agency is almost over and the NFL Draft is only a short month away. The Eagles have been very conservative in free agency this year, and have spent their money on locking up some of their core players. I don’t know if a Super Bowl is in the future, but they have ensured a competitive team for years to come. (That’s my boys!). That’s not to say that free agency was fruitless, as some small pieces of the puzzle were filled. The draft will hopefully fill in the rest. Usually, the teams that go crazy signing fee agents don’t fare too well, just look at the Redskins. I will be interested in seeing what happens in New England as they seemed to have opened the purse strings more than usual this year. On paper the moves have been very savvy, and I hope it pans out, but Alex will have to tell me the straight dope once the season starts.

In the mean time, I feel like some New Zealand spring Lamb.

Saturday Night

February 25th, 2007

We just had a great dinner with Matt and Dana. I told them to visit my blog so I hope they are reading this. There is not much else to report at this time, plus I’m tired, so goodnight and good luck!

General Musings for February

February 16th, 2007

WTG for all the Indy fans. I have some friends that are thankful that they won with the spread, other friends that are Bears fans (sorry). Rex Grossman delivered all that was promised. Now that Manning has the playoff jinx out of the way, the Colts are scaring me in the future. Once again, we had another great Super Bowl at Archie’s. Matt is trying to figure out how many years we’ve been going there and my guess is 98 (Den beating GB 31-24), but my memory has been messed up by many a Bud Bomb.

For those of you who think that the Eagles will be affected by the herion hijinks of the Reid sons, remember that Andy already has the T.O. experience behind him. Philly is looking good compared to the rest of the NFC East right now. For all the NFL fans out there, we have a long wait for some action, but the Combine and the Draft are next on the agenda. Eagles are picking 26th (I think), so hopefully they can get someone who’ll stop the run.

Happy Valentine’s Day to those of you who spent lots of money to impress your date. My experience working shows that most of the players spent a lot of money on the honeys, but didn’t have a lot left over for a tip…hope you got some action at least. I’m not bitter, though. Since when did 5% become the standard tip?

It is the middle of February, and listening to the radio, 70ish percent of Canadians think that we should have a stat holiday about now. I’m all up for that, but I’m interested in the 30ish percent of people who don’t want the holiday. I don’t get stat days off, but it’s nice to know that someone does.

Happy Birthday Mom. Bears or Colts?

February 4th, 2007

Just finished celebrating Mom’s Birthday and had a wicked time with the family. Dave and Brena had a good cruise in the Carribean and brought us back some rum cake. Thanks to Alex and Rinne for hosting the festivities tonight.

In just a few hours the Super Bowl will begin and I’m looking forward to seeing all the crew at Archies. I’m proud of the fact that most people have told me that they are dissapointed that the Eagles aren’t playing. At this point, I’m not sure who I’m cheering for. I’ll let you know if I lost money or not.

Thanks to everyone who showed up last weekend for my Birthday. I hope you had as good a time as I had.

The End Is Here

January 14th, 2007

The Eagles have just lost to the Saints so my Super Bowl hopes have just been dashed.  I try to think that it was a good, close game, but that is little consolation.  At this point, I have to start cheering for the Pats. Due to my tears, I cannot write any longer.
